American Lake Veterans Golf Course Receives Official Recognition from Golf Legend Jack Nicklaus
The American Lake Veterans Golf Course (ALVGC) is proud to announce that Jack Nicklaus, golf’s iconic “Golden Bear,” has designated the 18-hole course located in Lakewood, WA as an official Jack Nicklaus Signature Course. This announcement confirms that the renovation of the original front nine holes and the addition of a new back nine holes have been completed to the high standards set by the Nicklaus Organization.
Jack Nicklaus’s public endorsement brings renewed attention to the ALVGC mission: to provide an inclusive, life-changing environment for active duty, retired, and veteran service members and their families. The course has an ADA-accessible layout uniquely tailored to meet the needs of wounded, mobility-impaired, and disabled golfers so that they may ‘heal through the power of golf.’ Recently retired General Manager Bruce McKenty reflected, “Our veterans deserve a world-class, accessible facility. Jack’s recognition reinforces that they now have that.”
The Nicklaus Organization donated its time and resources to the project. The ALVGC raised the money to fund all the construction through community and foundation contributions, fundraisers, and private donations. Since the golf course’s inception in 1956, the ALVGC has successfully managed to operate, maintain, and improve every aspect of the course exclusively through a large cadre of dedicated volunteers. The Friends of ALVGC has invested more than $14 million since 2002 in construction projects and equipment. There are no paid employees. The course does not receive any federal funding.
